Summer of Suds Winner: Yuengling
CBSSports.com staff
With five weeks of voting behind us, CBSSports.com users
have spoken and the world's best beer has been named. After
taking down Killian's Irish Red, Miller, Blue Moon and Samuel
Adams in the domestic bracket, Yuengling had to battle with
Guinness, winner of the import bracket.
Over 5200 votes were cast in the finals alone, and Yuengling
is offcially the winner of SPiN's Summer of Suds! Creator
of America's oldest brewery, David G. Yuengling emigrated
from Aldingen, Germany and established the Eagle Brewery
on Centre Street in Pottsville, Pennsylvania in 1829. After
a fire completely destroyed the plant, a new brewery was
built on Mahantongo Street, site of the current brewery.
Lou Romano, Marketing Manager for Yuengling, was nice enough
to answer a few questions we had after his company's beer
was victorious. Here are the questions and his responses
below.
1. What should beer drinkers know about Yuengling and
its long history in the United States?
In 2009, the Yuengling Brewery will be celebrating 180
years of continuous Yuengling family ownership and operation
a
feat very few businesses can claim in any industry. We have
remained unique among breweries, distinguished by our culture,
heritage, traditions, and portfolio of brands. When you
consider everything this company has had to endure, it truly
is an American success story. Our current owner, Richard
Dick Yuengling, Jr., is very proud to preside
over Americas Oldest Brewery, and everyone
who works here is really a part of history.
2. For someone who has not yet had a Yuengling, how
would you describe its flavor?
We actually produce 7 quality beer brands, each unique
in character. Our flagship Lager Brand is noted for its
rich amber color, and its brewed with a roasted caramel
malt for subtle sweetness. It has a well balanced taste,
not heavy, making it a popular choice. In fact, in the areas
where our products are distributed, most customers simply
ask for a Lager and they get a Yuengling.
3. If I cant find Yuengling in my hometown, what
can I do? Where should I order from?
Currently, our products are only distributed in 11 states
along the east coast. In fact, we are just now preparing
to enter the state of Georgia, most likely at the end of
this month (October). Yuengling will now be served from
New York through Florida. Our growth strategy is slow and
steady. We operate very efficiently in our three breweries
(2 in Pottsville, PA, one is in Tampa, FL), but need to
follow the path of disciplined, calculated growth. So if
Yuengling is not distributed where you are, we thank you
for your patience!
4. What does it say about your beer to win a contest
like this when you defeated so many other great beers/breweries?
We are astounded every day by the loyalty of our drinkers,
and we are honored to have been included in the contest
at all. We are still a regional brewery, but we were competing
with some great national brands. I think people can identify
with who we are and the qualities we represent. Also, it
doesnt hurt that Dick Yuengling makes great beer.
5. Be honest, is working at a brewery the greatest job
ever?
Yes, its rewarding in very many ways, and we are
all proud to work here. And it feels particularly good when
fans literally provide you with a vote of confidence.
